Keith Smith

Keith Smith is a brilliantly free thinking, nomadic writer from Kentucky. He has authored six books. His most recent book—born from his travels through the Texas Panhandle—is titled, Nowhere Near The Middle: The Life Story of Valerie Doshier.

Cleansing Water

There is roughly the same amount of water on Earth as when Earth was formed. In a hundred-year span, a water molecule lives almost one hundred years in the ocean, about twenty months in the form of ice, only two weeks in rivers, streams and lakes, and less than one week in the atmosphere. Water that comes from my tap could possibly contain molecules that Neanderthals once drank.

“As I sit in cold, mountain streams, Intelligence awakens and eagerly rises up to meet itself. The Living Water in my body recognizes this other Watery Self. Hungrily it aligns with the water flowing around me. More than half my body is comprised of water. I am creek, river, sea and rain.

Questions arise and ancient memories awaken. How much water has flowed through this one single body? How far did it travel to reach my lips? Is it truly from millennia ago, now inside me? As I awaken, I become the water I see through my camera lens. Water gently swirling past my bare legs speaks to the water flowing through my veins. Water speaking to water. Can you hear the conversation?”

Living Earth

Earth was birthed out of a solar nebula approximately 4,567,000,000 years ago, part of the birth of our solar system, a swirling cloud of dust and gas…and here we are. I’ve only known Earth for a mere sixty-six years. That is barely a blip in her billions of years of creation and evolution. Yet, to say that I was here, that I stood barefoot upon beautiful blue and green Mother Earth—4,567,000,000 years after she was born—is a feeling so vast and ponderous that I will never fully comprehend it in the remaining years I am gifted. What Living Earth has given me and continues to give, what she gives us all is so singularly astounding that—at the very least—it merits daily reflection and deep feeling.

“Dear Earth, your love decomposes all that is not me. You leave me with wild prehistoric eyes. In our mating I forget myself and separation vanishes as if it has never been. You fill me with enough love to heal an entire universe. I’ve fallen desperately in love with Earth. If we don’t desperately love a thing, we can’t care for it.”

Within each of us lives a wild, primal force that hungers to throw us into the grand flow of life. It is a force so powerful and free that once unearthed we can do nothing but become wild ourselves.

The Great Mystery

We must never shut the door on our innately curious minds and desperately yearning hearts. We can ask ourselves, ‘Where have I fallen asleep at wheel?’ For life is meant to be lived, really lived, mistakes and all.
